Description
Greek and Latin Roots! Almost 70% of the English language is derived from Latin and Greek languages. When students learn these “building blocks” it becomes easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words that are related to a known root. It is also increasingly important to explicitly teach students the meanings of Greek and Latin roots as they encounter the very technical vocabulary found in science and other content areas.
This HUGE 282-page resource covers over 60 Greek and Latin roots and 200 different words. Created for grades 4-8.

Execllent Resource
This is an excellent resource for teaching Greek and Latin Roots. It is very well organized and easy to implement.
A great collection of resources!
This is a great collection to pull from to help students learn Greek and Latin Roots!
So helpful
This resource has everything needed. Very little prep needed!
An in depth resource
This resource was the perfect amount of challenging and helped my students think outside the box.
Great Resource
I have tried multiple vocabulary resources and have found myself coming back to this one time after time.

I still there any way to edit this document? I’m using the lists of ten words for spelling and vocabulary eaxh week. However, I would like to be able to differentiate for my students by modifying the lists and word wall cards.
Hi Molly. I made this resource in Adobe Illustrator, so I am unable to provide an editable version.
I was looking at the preview of this study and I was a little confused by the test on unit one book one. There are two questions that could have the answer aquatic in the first section, but neither question could have the answer marine. One is about trouts and one is about a pond. Neither are related to the sea to have marine as an answer, but the directions say to use each word once. Has this unit been updated since you posted the preview that I am looking at. Many thanks!
Hello! There isn't a mistake on the assessment. "Marine" is the correct answer for the first sentence. A trout is not considered a__________ species because it lives in freshwater streams, rivers, and lakes.
Is one book enough to cover a whole year doing 1 root a week for grade 4 students?
There is definitely enough content for one year. However, each unit contains 3 roots, so it might be difficult to stretch a unit over 3 weeks.
This looks like a great product, along with the Doodle pages. I have used another INB for many years, but will be teaching a group of students that are, the majority, below grade level, and I think the Doodle packet offers a more differentiated approach. However, does it have the assessments that this packet does? If not, will I be able to coordinate both, and suggestions on how you do that! thank you!
Susan
Hi Susan! Book 1 does include assessments for each unit, and the Doodle Notes are completely aligned with Book 1.
Do I need to purchase the book shown in order to use your resource?
Thanks!
Deb
Hi Deb, I am not sure which book you are referring to. This is a stand-alone resource that doesn't require any additional purchases.
I notices that your "Get to the Root of It #1" has been updated since I last downloaded it. Can you share what's been updated? Also, can you share how I could use this resource along side of our districts Wonders reading? I like to use the spelling and vocabulary words because they're in our daily reading activities.
Hi Mark! There was a pretty major update over a year. The content is all the same, just a few typographical errors were corrected. I am not familiar with Wonders or your district’s curriculum timeline, so it’s difficult for me to explain how to integrate this resource. Most people spend about a week to two weeks per unit.
I'm looking for a way to start teaching roots and affixes to my 3rd grade students. Would this resource be too high level for 3rd grade?
Hi Megan! It's difficult for me to say since I don't know your students. I suggest you download the preview file, which includes an entire unit and assessment.
I love your product. I was implementing it just fine, as was the fourth grade teacher. We were told by our admin that it's "not developmentally appropriate for 5th grade." I don't agree. However, if you have any kind of literature/research backing your program up, I'd appreciate it. (She has just this book. I have the entire bundle.)
Hello! There are plenty of studies that point to the efficacy of teaching Greek and Latin roots to develop vocabulary. If you email me, I’d be happy to send you them. Info@teacherthrive.com
Is Book 1/Book 2 directed towards a specific grade level?
I teach 8th Grade Language Arts and I am trying to find something suitable for their age range. Thank you!
Hello! I have a lot middle school teachers use this resource. Since every group of students is different, I recommend downloading the preview file to gauge if it will appropriate for your learners. Also, Book 2, is slightly more difficult than Book 1.
How do I distribute the file to the others that I bought a license for?
Hi Michelle! You have permission to share the files with the teachers you purchased licenses for via USB drive, email, or online drive (e.g. Google Drive). Let me know if you have any other questions. -Melissa
