Description
Greek and Latin Roots! Almost 70% of the English language is derived from Latin and Greek languages. When students learn these “building blocks” it becomes easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words that are related to a known root. It is also increasingly important to explicitly teach students the meanings of Greek and Latin roots as they encounter the very technical vocabulary found in science and other content areas.
This HUGE 282-page resource covers over 60 Greek and Latin roots and 200 different words. Created for grades 4-8.

I use this with my students in resource room. They all struggle with vocabulary, so this has been extremely helpful as many of them are bilingual. It takes the mystery out of the English words; there are a lot of "a-ha!" moments for them when they make the connections. To aid in retention and comprehension, I created supplemental pages that break down and reinforce each root word. I wouldn't have been able to do that without this resource. Overall, extremely happy with this!
I am very satisfied with the resource. It has been very beneficial and provides rigor for all learners.
This was a great unit to introduce root words to my students. Loved the sequence of each weekly lesson. Only thing I noticed that I would have changed is that some of the questions were a bit outdated, and some of the quiz questions weren't clear enough. Overall, great purchase!!
This has been really easy to prep and use with my child.
I used this resource with my students with reading disabilities to help them to better understand root words, and therefor better understand their technical terms that they encounter in grade level reading materials and curriculum.

Is this suitable for a gifted 3rd grade class?
Hello! I would think so. If you download the preview file, you can see an entire week to gage if it will be a good fit.
What fonts did you use for the titles and worksheets?
The font is called Runestone
Hi I purchased your resource but it's saying there is an error loading the PDF. Is there some way you could resend it to me? I'm looking forward to using it! Thank you for putting this resource together. :)

Week 11, the root SOL, how does the word SOLAR share that root meaning of one? SOLAR has the root SOL but meaning sun in Latin. Can you shed some insight to this please?
From my understanding, the roots are related (soli, sol) to the meaning of 1 (1 sun), which is why I teach them together.
Hello! Please forgive me if I'm asking a redundant question but:
I'm going to buy your INB and Book 1.
I understand that either can stand alone,
but would you recommend I look at Unit 1 in the Book 1 and then have the kids paste those roots in their INB for that week, since those are the ones that will be in their Book 1 work?
Hope that makes sense, thank you!
Hi Stephanie! Since all the roots in Book 1 have INB activities in the Interactive Notebook, yes, you can have those activities prepped for students to glue into their notebooks.
On 1B #3 should the answer be yes?
Yes, it should! Thank you. It's been corrected.
Hello! First of all- thank you so much for this! It is so useful. I did experience a problem when I printed some of the pages. The second to last and the last page of each unit prints with black bars going across the page. Just wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this??

Does this include the prefixes over and under?
This only contains roots. Affixes are included in the resource below. If you download the preview, you can see a list of all roots and/or prefixes included. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Prefixes-and-Suffixes-Practice-Printables-2271465
Do you sell the assessments separately? I'm using your doodle notes and I'd like an assessment, but I don't need everything else that comes with this
No, I don’t sell them separately. They aren’t designed to be used without the other activities.
I have a set of your Doodle notes for root words, LOVE IT! I'm considering buying this book, too. My question is... assessment. I see the preview of an assessment with a word bank and some multiple choice. Would you suggest assessing spelling for these words on like a typical weekly spelling test, or just focus on word meaning?
Hi Amy! These assessments are based on word meaning. However, many teachers also administer a basic dictation spelling test for the words for each unit. It’s really up to you.
