Description
Greek and Latin Roots! Almost 70% of the English language is derived from Latin and Greek languages. When students learn these “building blocks” it becomes easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words that are related to a known root. It is also increasingly important to explicitly teach students the meanings of Greek and Latin roots as they encounter the very technical vocabulary found in science and other content areas.
This HUGE 282-page resource covers over 60 Greek and Latin roots and 200 different words. Created for grades 4-8.

This was well-made.
Thank you for making this. I've always struggled to teach this concept, and this product helped me tremendously.
A Bit Too Advanced for 4th Grade
I also purchased the accompanying Sketch Notes and LOVE those for my 4th graders. It's a challenge for them just to use a dictionary and comprehend the definitions of some of the words. I was hoping to use this resource as a word work pair but find the assignments to be a bit too much for the age group. However, I do come from a 6th grade background and think these would be excellent for that age or above. I also think this is a quality resource with lots of ways to incorporate it.
A Well Crafted Resource
An excellent Greek and Latin roots vocabulary worksheet and activity resource. The level of challenge is great with the added analogies. I especially like the assessment option for each week.
Love these!
Our ELA curriculum was a bit lacking in vocabulary, so this was a great additional resource! It took a bit more time to teach and explain at the beginning, but once the students got used to the format, most of the students could complete these pretty independently.
Amazing Resource
Perfect resource to go along with the sketch notes for Greek and Latin roots with definitions, practice pages, and assessments :)

This is such a great resource! I just have a question about one of the analogies. In 6D, you have the answer as d, but wouldn't b be better? Just curious. Thanks!!
Thank you for contacting me. You are right! "b" is the correct answer. This was typo on the answer key. I will have an updated version up soon.
UPDATE: All fixed now! Thanks again!
I am finding a bit of confusion with the centurion word in Unit 15. I see you made corrections since I originally uploaded. Yet, on the 15B activitiy, you still have the meaning of centurion refering to a person over 100. I did see a correction was made on the quiz as well. You just might want to correct 15B #8.
On the Unit 14 test, my student totally messed up #3 and #5 with sextant and septet. I think since the definition never refered to a music group for sextant, it threw them off on the quiz. Would you please rewrite the sentence for #3 to fit with the meaning giving in the Unit? I see #5 for septet, but the kids were confused. Thank you.
I now see that I didn't correct 15.A on the student pages for the word centurion. The update is uploading right now. As far as the test 14 goes, 5 states "... he was always placed in the middle, with 3 other members to the right and to the left of him." That would indicate that including him, there are 7 members of the group, so septet would be the only option, leaving sextant the only possible option for #3. Correct me if I am missing something. Thank you for contacting me.
I was initially unable to print but now I am having luck! Thank you!!! This is a great resource!

I previously asked a month ago if you were going to make a larger label for the word wall that would say "Unit 1: Just Add Water," so that there could be a main header for a pocket chart. Are you still planning on doing this? If not, what font do you use for your titles, because I would like to be able to make some. Thank you!
Ack! I'm so sorry. Can you email me? I'll make some tonight and and them to you. gottoteach (at) icloud (dot) com
If I teach advanced 7th grade, would book 2 be a better resource for me?
Book 2 is slightly more difficult, so I would say go with that one if you're not going to get the bundle. I do have many 7th and 8th grade teachers that use both books. It really just depends on your class, but if you can only get one, then go with Book 2.
This is such a great addition to my LA curriculum! Just one question for you. Does it matter what order I do the units in? I've looked through it and it doesn't seem like it does. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything!
Great question! It does not matter what order you go in. Both books are designed so you can pick and choose the words that work best for your students! Take care and let me know if you have other questions.
Are these units based on a program? Last year we used a book by Trisha Callella, but it did not have all the great activities you have included. I'm curious as to how you came up with your list. I want to make sure its right for my class before I purchase. Thanks!
It is not based on a program. I chose roots and words that are highly utilized. You can see all of the roots and words in the preview. Thank you for your interest.
I love the product, but it seems that you and I don't agree on some of the analogies. For 3D, I chose d for #5 (the study of words is etymology, so the study of the Earth would be geology) and c for #7 (antonyms). Could you explain your reasoning for your choices?
Thanks!
Thanks for contacting me. 3D.5 is D; I just had a typo on the answer key. I will correct it right away.
Number 7 is a "lack" type of analogy: A "contentious" person lacks "laziness", and "cowardly" person lacks "bravery." If the word in C was "compassionate" then it would work. Students must also be mindful of the parts of speech when completing these as well, which is why I like using a "bridge" sentence (like above) when working with analogies. Correct answer is A.
Hope this helps.
Do you have an assessment pack that goes with this? Love the product! Jen
Thanks!
At this time I do not have an assessment componet to this item. I may add on at a later time.
UPDATE: Assessments have been added.
I looked at the preview and I LOVE it. However, I think I'd want a little bit more advanced version. Are you going to make a 7th/8th grade version? Thanks!
Thanks! I am planning on making another book with different roots, but it will be at a similar difficulty level as this one.
