Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1
Give your students the tools they need to build a stronger vocabulary with this creative and engaging resource! This Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1 set includes 60 unique doodle-style note pages that help students understand and remember essential Greek and Latin roots. These sketch notes combine visual and linguistic learning strategies, making it easier for students to grasp word meanings, decode unfamiliar words, and apply their knowledge in reading and writing.
Why Teach Greek and Latin Roots?
Did you know that almost 70% of the English language comes from Greek and Latin roots? Understanding these “building blocks” of language empowers students to decode words independently, boosting reading comprehension and spelling skills. As students encounter more advanced vocabulary—especially in science, social studies, and other content areas—a solid grasp of Greek and Latin roots helps them decipher meanings quickly and confidently.
This resource is designed to:
✅ Improve vocabulary retention through interactive, student-friendly sketch notes
✅ Reinforce critical thinking skills by connecting words to their root meanings
✅ Support reading comprehension by giving students tools to decode unfamiliar words
✅ Provide an alternative to traditional rote memorization with creative, meaningful activities
What’s Inside?
This resource includes 60 unique sketch note pages covering essential Greek and Latin roots. The roots are divided into 20 units (three roots per unit), mirroring the structure of the Get to the Root of It series. However, you do not need the Get to the Root of It book to use these sketch notes—this resource stands alone as a powerful vocabulary-building tool!
Each sketch note page includes:
✏️ A Greek or Latin root with a clear definition
✏️ Example words using that root in real-world contexts
✏️ A short fact or story to make the root more memorable
✏️ Visual elements to help students retain and apply what they learn
✏️ Space for students to decorate and personalize their notes
Perfect for interactive notebooks, small group instruction, independent work, and even class bulletin board displays, these sketch notes offer flexibility for different learning styles
Why Use Sketch Notes?
Traditional vocabulary lessons often rely on rote memorization, but sketch notes activate both the verbal and visual parts of the brain, helping students process and retain information more effectively. This hands-on approach encourages students to engage with the content in a meaningful, creative way—which means better long-term recall and application.

Great Addition to Functional Phonics
This is a great addition to the curriculum my school has! thankyou!
A great engaging resource!
My students had a lot of fun learning roots with this resource. It is highly engaging and fun for the students to be able to draw and doodle while taking notes.
Great for Roots
This was such a fun activity and very low prep for me! Students took different roots and completed the sketch notes. We were able to hang them up and share them. It’s impossible to cover all of them, but at least they were able to quickly learn a few and apply them to words they use!
great morphology resource
A well-done resource for any ELA teacher. It keeps students on task and helps with review. Thank you!

Could you give me a list of the stems that are included in this? I love the document but I want to be sure all of the latin stems that I have taught are included. Thanks!!
Hi Caitlyn! If you download the preview, you can see all the roots included. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Do you plan on adding anymore? I like these as a support for my ELLs. However, some of the prefixes we study aren't in here (re- base- com- con-)
Hi Jennifer! Right now I only have roots. I may make a set for affixes in the future, but right now I don’t have immediate plans to do.
Do you offer a bundled price for Doodle Notes Books 1 AND 2?
Would you ever consider adding a few roots to Doodle notes and your wonderful Greek and Latin Roots Interactive Notebook (Books 1 and 2)? Would love to have your product to include all fifteen of the roots we chose to assess!
Hi Jayne! I do not have a bundle of the doodle notes.
I have a question I . am looking for six different roots and 3 are found in your first book and three are found in your second book. Is there any way to get specific roots in one book? I understand if not. I was just going to try to avoid spending $28 for six root words. Thank you!
The six I am looking for are: olofy, hydro, scrib, spect, mis, and geo
Hi Amy! Unfortunately, I cannot break up the resource and sell components of it separately.
Just so I am understanding correctly, these Doodle Notes aren't repeated in Book 2 correct? I really want to use them but don't want to buy doubles. Thanks!
Hi Kiersten! The roots in Book 1 are completely different than the roots in Book 2. There is no duplicate material.
Hi,
I am just starting to teach root words and purchased it all. Your work is amazing! Do you have any quiz/tests that go along with your work? I need a way to hold my students accountable.
Thank you
Hi Linda. The assessments I have are part of this resource, which aligns perfectly with the Doodle Notes. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Greek-and-Latin-Root-Words-Book-1-882185?aref=fycyboly
I just purchased this and I'm a bit confused. It says on page 3 that the additional words are written around the border of each page, but I don't see that. Thanks
Hello! Sorry for the confusion. The students write the words around the margin.
Ah! Thank you for responding! Are these the same words as in your other vocabulary bundle but these are just doodle notes instead of foldables? Also is there a difference in bundle 1 vs 2? Meaning is one geared towards science/math verses something else? Just want to make sure I'm purchasing the correct version or versions :)
Hi Simone! The roots from the Doodle Notes Books 1 and 2 are the exact same roots from my Get to the Root of It Books 1 and 2.
Hi! In your opinion, with 7th graders who have different expierences with Greek/Latin root words prefixes/suffixes etc. which product would you best recommend out of all of your products? (They all seem so good!!!) I like the doodle notes but am wondering if that may be too high and students may need more scaffolding or if I should get the foldable ones instead but I'm affraid it may be too low? But I'm not sure. Please let me know which would work the best! Also how do you incorporate it into your teaching? Are the Greek/Latin words used as a warm up, once a week study, homework etc?
Hi Simone! For 7th graders, I would recommend that Doodle Notes. They don't take as much time as the INB, and I know in middle school your time can be limited. If you are looking for a more structured resource (worksheets, PowerPoints, assessments), then you could pair the doodle notes with my Get to the Root of It books (link below). You could spend one week on a unit in class or as homework (corrected in class). Please let me know if you have any other questions! https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Greek-and-Latin-Root-Words-Bundle-Books-1-2-962135
Hi. I was wondering about your product. What is the estimated time for each unit? Once a week?
He Stephanie! It really depends on the age and ability level of you students. Since the roots in each unit are related in meaning, I would say that one week would be adequate for most students.
