Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1
Give your students the tools they need to build a stronger vocabulary with this creative and engaging resource! This Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1 set includes 60 unique doodle-style note pages that help students understand and remember essential Greek and Latin roots. These sketch notes combine visual and linguistic learning strategies, making it easier for students to grasp word meanings, decode unfamiliar words, and apply their knowledge in reading and writing.
Why Teach Greek and Latin Roots?
Did you know that almost 70% of the English language comes from Greek and Latin roots? Understanding these “building blocks” of language empowers students to decode words independently, boosting reading comprehension and spelling skills. As students encounter more advanced vocabulary—especially in science, social studies, and other content areas—a solid grasp of Greek and Latin roots helps them decipher meanings quickly and confidently.
This resource is designed to:
✅ Improve vocabulary retention through interactive, student-friendly sketch notes
✅ Reinforce critical thinking skills by connecting words to their root meanings
✅ Support reading comprehension by giving students tools to decode unfamiliar words
✅ Provide an alternative to traditional rote memorization with creative, meaningful activities
What’s Inside?
This resource includes 60 unique sketch note pages covering essential Greek and Latin roots. The roots are divided into 20 units (three roots per unit), mirroring the structure of the Get to the Root of It series. However, you do not need the Get to the Root of It book to use these sketch notes—this resource stands alone as a powerful vocabulary-building tool!
Each sketch note page includes:
✏️ A Greek or Latin root with a clear definition
✏️ Example words using that root in real-world contexts
✏️ A short fact or story to make the root more memorable
✏️ Visual elements to help students retain and apply what they learn
✏️ Space for students to decorate and personalize their notes
Perfect for interactive notebooks, small group instruction, independent work, and even class bulletin board displays, these sketch notes offer flexibility for different learning styles
Why Use Sketch Notes?
Traditional vocabulary lessons often rely on rote memorization, but sketch notes activate both the verbal and visual parts of the brain, helping students process and retain information more effectively. This hands-on approach encourages students to engage with the content in a meaningful, creative way—which means better long-term recall and application.

Are these available in digital format?
Due to how these are intended to be used, we do not have digital versions of the Sketch Notes. They really are meant to be done by hand for students to get the true benefits of using them.
Hi! I love this resource, but I was wondering if you could provide us with a digital format. Since this next school year will be completely online it would really be helpful. Thank you.
Hi Rosalie, We do have a digital version here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/DIGITAL-Greek-and-Latin-Roots-Book-1-Distance-Learning-5351808
I am an online teacher with Outschool. Can I use these worksheets with my online students?
Thank you for asking. None of my resources are allowed to be used for online commercial purposes such as Outschool.
I think this product looks like a great way to teach students, but we are doing everything in remote learning. I was not paying attention that these were pdf versions only. Is there a way to make them for use online?
Hi Hope,
You may use any of my materials online with your students only on a private platform like Google Classroom. However, I do not have a digitally adapted version for this resource.
Will these be available in google slides?
Hello! No these won't be created in a digital format.
These come in a PDF form. I am an online teacher who shares documents in a a closed online setting (students log in to canvas to get access to my class). Would I be allowed to share these digitally with students so I can assign them?
That’s not a problem. As long as only your students can access them, you’re fine. Thanks for asking.
Is there any way to get a blank sketch notes page as some of the roots I need for TEKS are not included in Book 1 & 2?
Thank you.
Yes! I just got your email. I’ll send it to you as soon as I’m back at my computer.
Is there a key for this resource? I really like to colored examples that are all filled out, but I'm a little bummed it's not included in the actual resource. Thanks in advance!
Hi Jackie, This resource doesn't include an answer key since students will be using different words. Each root has several possible words that can be used, but each page only has room from three words.
Hi, I really love this resource. I am wondering if it would be possible at some point to include an editable page for each of the words OR to include a complete sample of each of the pages in this resource. This would greatly help my high needs EFL students when we do small group differentiation.
Hello! Unfortunately, since this resource was created in Adobe Illustrator, I am unable to provide an editable version. However, I can email you a blank pdf version. Please email me at info@teacherthrive.com
Oh, how I wish these were compatible with Caesar's English Book 2! :( :( :( Is there any way you can make that happen? Perhaps just making them editable?
I am not familiar with that program. You can download the preview file to see if the roots line up. Unfortunately, because I created this resource on Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, I am unable to provide an editable version.
