Description

Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1

Give your students the tools they need to build a stronger vocabulary with this creative and engaging resource! This Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1 set includes 60 unique doodle-style note pages that help students understand and remember essential Greek and Latin roots. These sketch notes combine visual and linguistic learning strategies, making it easier for students to grasp word meanings, decode unfamiliar words, and apply their knowledge in reading and writing.

Why Teach Greek and Latin Roots?

Did you know that almost 70% of the English language comes from Greek and Latin roots? Understanding these “building blocks” of language empowers students to decode words independently, boosting reading comprehension and spelling skills. As students encounter more advanced vocabulary—especially in science, social studies, and other content areas—a solid grasp of Greek and Latin roots helps them decipher meanings quickly and confidently.

This resource is designed to:
✅ Improve vocabulary retention through interactive, student-friendly sketch notes
✅ Reinforce critical thinking skills by connecting words to their root meanings
✅ Support reading comprehension by giving students tools to decode unfamiliar words
✅ Provide an alternative to traditional rote memorization with creative, meaningful activities

What’s Inside?

This resource includes 60 unique sketch note pages covering essential Greek and Latin roots. The roots are divided into 20 units (three roots per unit), mirroring the structure of the Get to the Root of It series. However, you do not need the Get to the Root of It book to use these sketch notes—this resource stands alone as a powerful vocabulary-building tool!

Each sketch note page includes:
✏️ A Greek or Latin root with a clear definition
✏️ Example words using that root in real-world contexts
✏️ A short fact or story to make the root more memorable
✏️ Visual elements to help students retain and apply what they learn
✏️ Space for students to decorate and personalize their notes

Perfect for interactive notebooks, small group instruction, independent work, and even class bulletin board displays, these sketch notes offer flexibility for different learning styles

Why Use Sketch Notes?

Traditional vocabulary lessons often rely on rote memorization, but sketch notes activate both the verbal and visual parts of the brain, helping students process and retain information more effectively. This hands-on approach encourages students to engage with the content in a meaningful, creative way—which means better long-term recall and application.

Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1 - Great resource!

I love this set of Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes! It makes them more interesting to my students by adding a creative aspect to their learning. Seller was very helpful in sending a blank version in order for me to adapt for roots that weren't included but are required by my district. Thank you!

If I get the Doodles, will the finished product also include book 2 or will that be a separate purchase? I have both books.

Teacher Thrive

Hi Kathleen. This resource is now complete. Book 2 is a separate purchase. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Greek-and-Latin-Roots-Doodle-Notes-Sketch-Notes-Growing-Resource-Book-2-3352606

Hi! I am about to introduce your fabulous Greek and Latin Roots Book 1 and PPTs and Interactive Notebook. I am very interested in your Doodle Notes Resource for Book 1, but I cannot tell if the resource includes suggestions for the three related words that go with each root. Can you please let me know? Thanks for such terrific materials!
Sharon

Teacher Thrive

Hello Sharon! Each root comes with a list of words to use. Students can choose from this list and look up definitions, or they can use the words and definitions that are included in the Get to the Root of It books.

Emmaline S.

Hi there!
These are A-Mazing!!!
Is there any chance that these are editable?
I'm in Aus and would just need to tinker with a couple of things.
Em

Teacher Thrive

Hi Em! Unfortunately, I made these in Adobe Illustrator so I am unable to provide an editable version.

Missyteacher

By any chance can you have graph alone on the page without gram? I want to purchase, but we just do one root each week. Thank u for your consideration

Teacher Thrive

I could make this modification for you. Just email me your order id number and I'll send it to you. GotToTeach@icloud.com

Jennifer P.

Do you have the color versions available as well?

Teacher Thrive

Hi Jennifer! The color versions are just for display purposes. I only did them for the samples on the cover. Also, they would make the file too large to load on tpt.

Greg W.

I just found your "Doodle Notes" and thought what a great introduction to the Latin and Greek roots of English. My "problem" is that all your products seem interesting and potentially helpful. Is there a recommended order of progression? Or a good group to start with? My daughter is starting 4th grade.

Teacher Thrive

Hello! You can really pick and choose any of the roots you want to use. I made these Doodle Notes based on roots that are commonly seen in English, so they all have high utility rates.

Kim Hunnicutt

Does an "incomplete growing resource", mean that if I purchase this resource now for $10 I will receive the additional resources to this bundle as you add them at no additional cost?

Teacher Thrive

Yes, that's correct. There will be 20 units in this resource when complete. Right now there are 16. When I add the last 4 sometime this week, the price will increase to $14. If you have already purchased it for $10, you'll be able to get the added content for free.

Patti E.

Hi again - thanks for answering my previous question - I didn't word it quite correctly though. I see that these notes include the math related terms, I was actually wondering if you would be making a seperate set specifically for the math words (ie: doodle notes and corresponding lessons from your "Get to the Root of It" books.) Your resources are so fantastic looking I wish I could buy them all, but as it is, I have to prioritze my spending. Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

I only plan on making sets that align with by Get to The Root of It books. Making a separate resource with just the math related roots might cause confusion, leading people to buy redundant material.

The Travelling Miss

I love the look of this resource! Was just wondering if you are planning to create a version with Australian (British) spelling? Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

Hello! I don't have plans to make a separate version for British spelling. However, the next update will be unlocked to that people can make minor text changes via Adobe Pro or a similar PDF editor.

Dianna Z.

If I am understanding correctly, if I already own the ultimate bundle, these will be added to that, so, if I want these, I do not need to make a separate purchase. Is that correct? Thanks so much for all of your wonderful products!!

Teacher Thrive

Yes ma'am, these are yours for no additional purchase! In fact all of my Ultimate Vocabulary Bundle teachers will get everyone of my future Doodle Notes for FREE! If you check your purchases, you will already have units 1-8 (Book 1) ready to download. Many, many more on the way! Thanks Dianna!
