Give your students the tools they need to build a stronger vocabulary with this creative and engaging resource! This Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1 set includes 60 unique doodle-style note pages that help students understand and remember essential Greek and Latin roots. These sketch notes combine visual and linguistic learning strategies, making it easier for students to grasp word meanings, decode unfamiliar words, and apply their knowledge in reading and writing.
Why Teach Greek and Latin Roots?
Did you know that almost 70% of the English language comes from Greek and Latin roots? Understanding these “building blocks” of language empowers students to decode words independently, boosting reading comprehension and spelling skills. As students encounter more advanced vocabulary—especially in science, social studies, and other content areas—a solid grasp of Greek and Latin roots helps them decipher meanings quickly and confidently.
This resource is designed to:
✅ Improve vocabulary retention through interactive, student-friendly sketch notes
✅ Reinforce critical thinking skills by connecting words to their root meanings
✅ Support reading comprehension by giving students tools to decode unfamiliar words
✅ Provide an alternative to traditional rote memorization with creative, meaningful activities
What’s Inside?
This resource includes 60 unique sketch note pages covering essential Greek and Latin roots. The roots are divided into 20 units (three roots per unit), mirroring the structure of the Get to the Root of It series. However, you do not need the Get to the Root of It book to use these sketch notes—this resource stands alone as a powerful vocabulary-building tool!
Each sketch note page includes:
✏️ A Greek or Latin root with a clear definition
✏️ Example words using that root in real-world contexts
✏️ A short fact or story to make the root more memorable
✏️ Visual elements to help students retain and apply what they learn
✏️ Space for students to decorate and personalize their notes
Perfect for interactive notebooks, small group instruction, independent work, and even class bulletin board displays, these sketch notes offer flexibility for different learning styles
Why Use Sketch Notes?
Traditional vocabulary lessons often rely on rote memorization, but sketch notes activate both the verbal and visual parts of the brain, helping students process and retain information more effectively. This hands-on approach encourages students to engage with the content in a meaningful, creative way—which means better long-term recall and application.

Hello! I’m looking at these Greek and Latin roots sketch notes for a new class. Is there a list of roots included that I can see? I already have a list I want to use, and I would like to see whether most of them are covered in your Book 1 and Book 2 doodle notes. Thanks!
Hello! If you download the preview file, you can see all of the roots that are covered in each book.
Hi! Last question ;)
I'm wondering if I can use your Sketch Notes as a time-saver/shorter version of your INB at times when I don't have time to do a full out INB page?
I get the benefits of both, just wondering if I can also look at it that way, or not?
Definitely! That’s why I created them. They take way less time.
Is there a list of words in the bundle?
Hi Chelsea. Suggested word lists are included for each root.
Hi! I'm wondering if you would be open to creating either a blank template or to adding different roots? For instance, my special ed students need to learn "sign" as a root. Is there a way to modify the file to do that? Thanks in advance!
Hi Rachel! I’d be happy to send you a blank version. Please email me at info@teacherthrive.com
Is there a possible way to figure out exactly what Greek/Latin words are in this pack? I loved your free pack! But i have 15 Greek/Latin words that we have to teach and I’m not sure which pack would have the words I need in them! Thanks so much.
Hi Kirrissa. The pages do not contain preselected words, so you can use any words you like. If you want to know exactly what roots are covered, please download the preview file.
Hi! So I let my students choose 3 words for each root-- how do you suggest creating an assessment if each student chooses their own words (so they all have different word lists?) Thanks!
If students are selecting their own words, then you’ll have to provide an opened assessment. Perhaps one that requires them to use their words in context? I do have assessments with my Get to the Root of It books, if you’re looking for something more structured.
Is there a list of which roots are included? Like a table of contents...Thanks!
Yes! Just download the preview file and you’ll see the table of contents.
For some reason I am getting an error message when I try to download this PDF. I got Book 2 to open fine and I can download other PDFs so I am confused why I can't download this one...

Hi! Help please!!! I purchased this product and am very excited to begin using. However, every time I try to print it I receive a message that says the document is protected and I am asked to enter a password. How do I locate or obtain a password to print it? Thanks!

Does each book only include 20 words? So it is $14.00 for 20 words?
Just clarifying :)
Hi Alyssa! This resource contains a unique doodle page for 60 different roots. Each page has room for 3 related words. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
