Description

Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1

Give your students the tools they need to build a stronger vocabulary with this creative and engaging resource! This Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes: Book 1 set includes 60 unique doodle-style note pages that help students understand and remember essential Greek and Latin roots. These sketch notes combine visual and linguistic learning strategies, making it easier for students to grasp word meanings, decode unfamiliar words, and apply their knowledge in reading and writing.

Why Teach Greek and Latin Roots?

Did you know that almost 70% of the English language comes from Greek and Latin roots? Understanding these “building blocks” of language empowers students to decode words independently, boosting reading comprehension and spelling skills. As students encounter more advanced vocabulary—especially in science, social studies, and other content areas—a solid grasp of Greek and Latin roots helps them decipher meanings quickly and confidently.

This resource is designed to:
✅ Improve vocabulary retention through interactive, student-friendly sketch notes
✅ Reinforce critical thinking skills by connecting words to their root meanings
✅ Support reading comprehension by giving students tools to decode unfamiliar words
✅ Provide an alternative to traditional rote memorization with creative, meaningful activities

What’s Inside?

This resource includes 60 unique sketch note pages covering essential Greek and Latin roots. The roots are divided into 20 units (three roots per unit), mirroring the structure of the Get to the Root of It series. However, you do not need the Get to the Root of It book to use these sketch notes—this resource stands alone as a powerful vocabulary-building tool!

Each sketch note page includes:
✏️ A Greek or Latin root with a clear definition
✏️ Example words using that root in real-world contexts
✏️ A short fact or story to make the root more memorable
✏️ Visual elements to help students retain and apply what they learn
✏️ Space for students to decorate and personalize their notes

Perfect for interactive notebooks, small group instruction, independent work, and even class bulletin board displays, these sketch notes offer flexibility for different learning styles

Why Use Sketch Notes?

Traditional vocabulary lessons often rely on rote memorization, but sketch notes activate both the verbal and visual parts of the brain, helping students process and retain information more effectively. This hands-on approach encourages students to engage with the content in a meaningful, creative way—which means better long-term recall and application.

Loved this resource. It went really well with our literacy and morphology work. The students loved filling in the information and learning about the origin of words and the meaning of the root words, prefixes and suffixes. Great resource.

Gayle L.

This was a very creative way to help students recognize that words have many similarities and that you can find those and use them to understand new words

Erica P.

Good resource for in class supports! Thank you for providing.

I used this with my sheltered ESOL ELA classes. It was a great daily activity to support their ability to decode larger/unfamiliar words and their meaning.

Mary R.

My students were eager to use this resource as it presented practicing prefixes and suffixes in a different way.

Hello! I was wondering if you would be updating these with any more roots. I am needing omni and luc Or do I seem not to find them. I have both books. Thank you!!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Adriana! Unfortunately, we do not have any of the sketch notes with these roots. However, we do have a blank PDF that might be helpful. Please email us at info@teacherthrive.com if you'd like us to send it to you.

Abby L.

I accidentally bought Book 2 instead of book 1. We are using these with our 4th graders. Does it matter which book we start with? Is Book 2 more difficult/lesson common roots?

Teacher Thrive

Hi Abby! Book 2 will work great for 4th since you can select the words the students use in the order they use them.

Claudia B.

Hello! I was wondering if there might be any way to provide the Sketch Notes with the vocabulary lists at the end? I would like to print out all the sketch notebook pages for individual students that I tutor, but don't want to include all the class vocab lists. I'm trying to cut down on printing costs and the number of pages. I will be using it with the Get to the Root of It 1, so we have plenty of words to draw from. Love your work. Just a suggestion for people looking to print the sketch pages only.
Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

Hello, Claudia! Thanks for reaching out. While we don't have a file version as you've described, you can easily create a PDF with just the sketch notes. Simply copy the PDF file on your computer and delete all of the word list pages.

Kelsey M.

Do you plan to make this virtual?

Teacher Thrive

Thanks for reaching out! The sketch notes are designed to be used as a printable resource. Doodle notetaking activates verbal and visual modalities to capture concepts. The whole brain is absorbed in hearing, synthesizing, and retaining ideas.

I have both Books 1 and 2. My students love them!

We study some alternative roots so was wondering if you have a blank proforma that follows that same system so we can add in some of our own?

My email is klewis@bdc.nsw.edu.au

Thanks so much!!!!

Teacher Thrive

We'll be sending you an email shortly! :-)

I bought your terrific Sketch Notes (1 & 2) two years ago. Is there any way you'll update this to use as digital material??

I love the look of your sketch notes! I am using the SIOP 14 roots that unlock 100,000 words in English. Have you by any chance added any of these?:
duc/duce/duct
fac, fact/ fic, fict
fer
pli/ply
ten/tent/tain

Teacher Thrive

Thanks for reaching out. We have not, but will keep your suggestion in mind when considering future projects.

Heather R.

Hi! I am so excited for my students to use this resource. Would it be possible for you to create a student instruction page. Something similar to the one created for teachers with the picture of one of the actual pages. It would be really helpful for students to have instructions to refer to when needed.
Thank you!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Heather,
I do not have plans on editing this resource at this time, but you can definitely hand out the instruction page that is included for teachers.

Danielle M.

I have never used sketch noting and was wondering how you use this in the classroom. Since each page only has room for 3 words, do you print multiple pages so that students can write out all 11 words?

Teacher Thrive

Hi Danielle,
These are broken down into 20 3-word units. Each page comes with a list of related words and students can choose three words to use on their doodle notes page. If you would like them to use more words, then of course you can print additional pages to use.

Randi C.

Hello,

My school follows the "From the Roots Up" Greek and Latin root curriculum. Would it be possible for me to see a list of the roots that are taught in each book, so I can see if it matches up enough with our curriculum book :)

Thank you!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Randi,
Thanks for reaching out! The preview of the product show the roots that are included in each resource. Page 2 of the particular resource you are referring to shows the specific roots taught.
