Description
Greek and Latin Roots! Almost 70% of the English language is derived from Latin and Greek languages. When students learn these “building blocks” it becomes easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words that are related to a known root. It is also increasingly important to explicitly teach students the meanings of Greek and Latin roots as they encounter the very technical vocabulary found in science and other content areas.
This HUGE 282-page resource covers over 60 Greek and Latin roots and 200 different words. Created for grades 5-8.

I am going to combine the reviews for book one and book two. I will explain in the review.
I teach science in Oakland, California. I have many bright, talented students who achieve well on tests AND who have just average vocabularies. All their learning of new words was independent of other words and independent of other course work with other teachers.
I started with book one in fourth and fifth grades this year. My fifth grade students also have the option of units from book two and taking quizzes from book two. They receive an incredibly small amount of "extra credit" for this work and some parents approached me about wanting more challenge for their kids. It started out with just a few students (5 - 6) students working from book 2. (Next year all fourth graders will complete book 2 in fifth grade). Now I have 19 of the 26 fifth grade students requesting the book 2 packages because the packages are "fun, interesting and help me in understanding science."
I appreciate the consistency of the packages. I LOVE reading my students work from page 4 of the package - where students compare and contrast or use the words in context. It shows me their home lives, what they think, how they feel and their hopes and dreams. An example was when a student who has difficulty with finishing homework wrote, "I like to come to Ms. R's science lab after school to do my homework because the cacophony never stops at home."
Great product!!
Easy to use!
Great practice.
Just finished the first book with my 5th graders and am excited to get to the second book.

I am looking into purchasing your Greek and Latin bundle, however I am curious as to how the analogies section works as there seems to be several correct responses. Is there something that I am not seeing that is making this section very difficult for my students or do you have some helpful tips/advice?
Hi Danielle, The best way to set students up for success for the analogies, its best to teach students the common types of analogies. I have a blog post and a freebies to help you. https://teacherthrive.com/2017/02/teaching-word-analogies.html
Has anyone noticed that the answer key for the analogies and the correct answers are not the same? My partners and I have disagreed with several of the answers that we thought were correct and what the answer key said on several of the pages (Units 9, 12, and 20 to be exact).
Hello! I wonder if you are using an older version. These have been completely edited about a month and a half ago. Download the latest version and any issues should be resolved.
Hello! I'm wondering whether book 1 or 2 is more appropriate for 8th graders. In other words, which book has more advanced vocabulary?
Hi! Book 2 is a bit more difficult than Book 1. However, both could be used in 8th grade. It just depends on your students and the roots you want to cover. I do have Book 1 and Book 2 bundled together.

What does a typical week look like using this resource? About how long is spent on introducing the roots and the activities? I only have a 50 minute ELA block and am just trying to figure out how I can best fit in this great resource. Thanks.
Hello! It really can vary depending on your students. Some people spend two weeks on one unit, which might be best for you since you only have 50 mins.
Just curious :) Have you begun working on Greek and Latin Roots book 3?
Hi Kathleen. No I haven't. I've been so busy and frankly, after making Books 1 and 2, I'm a little "zapped", creatively. I do hope to get to it, I just needed some time while I work on some things that are a little different. Thank you so much for your interest and your patience.
Hi there!
I am actively using these books every week in my middle school ELA classes. Most students are studying the 10 basic words every week, but I have some students who are also studying the "extra" words found on the word lists. I just wondered if you might consider creating an "expansion" pack of activities or quizzes that include both the regular words and the extension words?
Hi Katherine! I will definitely keep the suggestion in mind. I am not sure when/if I will be able to add an "expansion pack," but you do have my wheels turning:-)
