Prefixes and Suffixes Sketch Notes – A Fun, Interactive Approach to Word Study!

Are your students struggling with vocabulary development? Do they need a creative and effective way to grasp prefixes and suffixes? This Prefixes and Suffixes Sketch Notes resource provides an engaging way to teach morphology while encouraging deeper understanding through visual note-taking!

Why Teach Prefixes and Suffixes?

Nearly 70% of the English language comes from Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. By helping students understand these foundational word parts, they can decode new words, improve spelling, and strengthen reading comprehension. This skill is especially beneficial for tackling complex academic vocabulary in subjects like science, social studies, and math.

What Makes Sketch Notes Effective?

Traditional worksheets and drills can be boring and ineffective, but sketch notes activate both the verbal and visual parts of the brain. Through doodling, labeling, and organizing their thoughts, students actively process new vocabulary in a way that sticks. This multi-sensory approach is ideal for all learners, including visual and kinesthetic learners, students with learning differences, and English Language Learners (ELLs).

What’s Included in This Resource?

This comprehensive set includes 128 pages of carefully crafted sketch notes designed to reinforce understanding of prefixes and suffixes. The units align with

All About Affixes Practice Printables but can be used independently as well.

✅ 25 Units of Sketch Notes – Each unit focuses on 2-4 prefixes or suffixes, helping students systematically build their word knowledge.
✅ Engaging Visuals – Students can color, doodle, and create connections between word parts.
✅ No-Prep Printables – Just print and go! Perfect for centers, independent work, or whole-class instruction.
✅ Greek & Latin Roots Connection – Helps students link prefixes and suffixes to root words for deeper understanding.
✅ Ideal for Grades 4-6 – Primarily used in 4th and 5th grade, but also great for struggling students in middle school.

How Can You Use These Sketch Notes?

✏️ Whole-Class Instruction: Introduce a new set of prefixes or suffixes and complete a sketch note as a class.
✏️ Small Groups or Centers: Provide students with targeted practice based on their needs.
✏️ Independent Work: Great for morning work, homework, or early finishers.
✏️ Intervention & Special Education: A powerful tool for students with dyslexia, ADHD, or language processing challenges.
✏️ ELL Support: Helps emerging bilingual students grasp word meanings through visuals.

Prefixes and Suffixes Sketch Notes Morphology
Noelle H.

Clever Visual Approach, But Not My Favorite

The sketch-note style brings a creative visual twist to prefixes and suffixes, which I can appreciate in theory. However, the doodle-heavy format isn’t quite my cup of tea. The content seems well-designed and could work well for visual learners, but personally, it didn't click with me.

Creative Concept, Just Not My Jam

The visual layout and doodle-style sketch notes are undeniably creative and well-executed, but the heavily visual format still didn’t resonate with my preferences. I appreciate the effort behind it and can see how it might engage visual learners, yet, personally, it didn’t click for me.

Creative Concept, But Not Quite for Me

The sketch notes are a creative approach and seem to work well for visual learners, but the doodle-heavy format just isn’t my style. The content is solid, and I can see the appeal for some classrooms, but overall it didn’t really win me over.

5th Grade Daily MATH Spiral Review Morning Work [Editable] Test Prep
Andrea B.

Would recommend for 6th grade

I purchased this as 5th grade homework/morning work, however even the first few weeks cover things like exponents, multiplying and dividing decimals, etc. that we will not get to until later in the year. I think it would work well for 6th grade as it reviews 5th material.

Teacher Thrive

<p>Hello, Andrea! Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. </p><p>This resource is not designed around a particular scope and sequence since many teachers follow different timelines.</p><p>Since Daily Spiral Reviews cover all standards, students are exposed to concepts they may not have had formal instruction on. Unfamiliar content presents a great opportunity for you to build background knowledge and assess where your students are before you even teach a specific lesson.</p><p>The best way to use this spiral review is to begin with whole-group lessons where you model and discuss each activity. I don't worry too much if there haven't been formal lessons on a particular concept; I treat those items more as a preview. After a few weeks, the students really start grasping the format, and you can begin to transfer the workload to them. Eventually, when the students work independently on the review, you will spend time correcting and discussing their work in class. </p><p>As mentioned above, students will encounter concepts they are unfamiliar with. This is a GOOD thing, I promise! We don't always have the answers or know the procedures to solve problems. It's healthy to expose students to "unknowns"; they become less sensitive to the uncomfortable feeling of "not knowing" and are less likely to panic.</p><p>However, you can always use the editable version (open in PowerPoint) to remove/change any review items you like. Thanks for reaching out! </p>

Nonfiction Problem and Solution Resource for Advanced or Upper Elementary Students

I tried using this nonfiction problem and solution resource with my third graders. It has great materials, but it’s definitely better suited for more advanced students or upper elementary. With some modifications, it could work well for younger learners too.

Thank you in advance.

Do you have one of these filled out as an example?
Thank you!

Teacher Thrive

Emily C.

Hi, I'm looking at the sketch sheet for il/ir/im/in ("not/without") and notice that 'inject' and 'infuse' appear on the "When To Use What" section at the bottom. These should be on the in/into page, no? Is there a way for us to edit these once we've purchased? Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

Hello, Emily. I only have the notes with the following prefixes. Not: a-,/an-, il-/ir-, im-/in-, non-

Unfortunately, I am unable to provide an editable version of this resource because I created it using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Jo F.

Hello! I am about to purchase these but after going through my curriculum I found that I have 14 affixes that are not included in your pack. Is there an editable page so that I can add these to my set? Thank you so much, I love these!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Jo! Yes, we have a blank template available for these that we can send you. Our email is info@teacherthrive.com.

D G.

Hello! Are these sized for composition notebooks or full-size notebooks?

Teacher Thrive

Hello! These do not require a notebook.

Kristin P.

I teach 6th & 7th ESL and the sketch notes are very helpful. I noticed that there aren't pages for un-, dis-, or mis-. Do you plan on adding these?

Teacher Thrive

Hi there! I don't plan on adding these at this time. However, you are more than welcome to email us at info@teacherthrive.com for a blank template to use!

Leslie M.

I see you include a list of words. Do you also include the definitions?

Teacher Thrive

Hello! The meaning of each affix is included, but not the definitions of each specific word.

Mainely Elementary

Do you have a sketch notes bundle for all prefixes/suffixes and greek & latin roots? I like how engaging and colorful these are so I'm only interested in the sketch notes. Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

Unfortunately, we do not have a Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes bundle with all of these components. TpT doesn't have a function that allows us to easily create custom bundles in a way that ensures customers always have the latest version of their resources, so we don't offer this option on TpT. We do have a Build Your Own Bundle option on our off-site store that you can check out here: https://teacherthrive.com/byob/

Alyson Spirko

Is there an answer key?

Teacher Thrive

Thanks for reaching out! This resource doesn't include an answer key since students will be using different words. Each root has several possible words that can be used, but each page only has room for three words.

Tories Teacher Tips

Hi there! I actually have a question about your shop as a whole, not this particular resource. But I couldn't find a way to send you a message. I am wondering if you would consider creating a bundle of your grammar sketch notes without the other things like powerpoint lesson, practice, task cards, and assessment. I would be very interested in purchasing just your sketch notes for grammar (4th and 5th grade) to accompany my curriculum.

Teacher Thrive

Thank you for your interest and for reaching out. We do not sell these components separately. They are only available as part of the comprehensive program.
