Description
Greek and Latin Roots! Almost 70% of the English language is derived from Latin and Greek languages. When students learn these “building blocks” it becomes easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words that are related to a known root. It is also increasingly important to explicitly teach students the meanings of Greek and Latin roots as they encounter the very technical vocabulary found in science and other content areas.
This resource combines the instructional value of Greek and Latin roots with the active engagement of Interactive Notebooks. Included are 120 Interactive Notebook activities that will help your students understand the meaning of several words related to over 130 different roots! Each root activity covers 3-8 preselected words. However, blank templates are also included so that you can select your own words. In addition to the Interactive Notebook pages, you will also get word and definition lists for each root.

great resource
This is an activity that is kinesthetic and visual. If you have the students read aloud their work to a partner or their group, then it can include auditory learning as well. I used these when I found them late last school year by including these as an activity filler. Students enjoyed them and made some of my slower working students curious enough to hustle more to complete tasks timely with the thought of cutting, coloring, and gluing. I'm looking forward to supplementing lessons with these resources again this year.
These activities are well thought out. They can be used with other resources also. They activities can also be broken down into which parts to be done over a series of days depending upon available time: day 1 cut and glue/tape, day two color, day three using words in a sentence, day four present to table mates or 1 or 2 students present to class, day five create/play a game such as hangman, charades, alphabetize words, syllabicate words, quiz, etc.
My students are given a separate notebook to keep these in for their vocabulary lessons. They must use a table of contents to support their need to find information later. This activity is very convenient for such. I create a model that students can use as a guide to work independently.
Since reading skills are low and vocabulary is one of the reasons why where I teach, these will help boosting reading scores. Last year, I was able to compare results with my two co-teach classes. 1- taught more consistent morphology. 1- taught some morphology. Both grew at least 40%. The group with morphology grew 70%. Although, I know there were other reasons that contributed to why the second grew more, the morphology work helped those students read better overall.
This is a great resource. I used to have my students make it for their notebooks. However, it consumed too much of the time. I just make a classroom version. I project it on the board and trace it on a butcher paper. Paste construction paper at the back to make it less flimsy, and then I hang it.
This is a fantastic way to teach Greek/Latin roots. It also helps them learn how to cut and glue. Something you would think 5th graders would know by now, but many don't.
Absolutely flat-out brilliant. My students loved this.

Does this contain all of the roots in the Get To The Root of It book one and two packs?
Thanks for reaching out! Yes, this includes every root from both books plus some additional roots.
Is this resource available in Google Slides ready for GC? Thank you
Hi Renata,
Thanks for reaching out! The interactive notebooks are designed to be used as a printable resource and really are intended to be a tactile learning tool.
Hi there! Do you have a list of the greek/latin roots covered in this pack? I am interested, but want to make sure that the ones I will be teaching are in here!
Hello! Yes, the roots covered start on page 6 of the preview.
Would it be possible to get this in interactive Google Slides? It would be a HUGE help during distance learning!
Hello! Thanks for reaching out. The interactive notebooks are designed to be used as a printable resource and really are intended to be a tactile learning tool.
Hi, I teach for an online school. I get paid for each class and for each student that attends. May I use your Greek and Latin Roots Interactive Notebook material in my online classes? I may just use a few ideas or all of them throughout my lessons. I will share where I purchased the item on each page. Lessons are recorded so kids can view later, but I don't share the individual product with kids. I am just showing it in a PPT.
Thank you,
Debbie
Hi Debbie,
Thanks for asking. Teachers are absolutely allowed to use any Teacher Thrive/Got to Teach resources they have purchased with their students on private Learning Management Systems likes Google Classroom, Schoology, Microsoft Teams, or Canvas.
We do prohibit users from sharing resources with other teachers who have not purchased the materials, however. We also prohibit the use of our materials for commercial purposes on platforms such as Outschool.
Again, thank you for reaching out. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Do you still have Book 1 only for sale? I only have enough time to do Book 1 throughout the year, so I can't use the Book 2 resources included in this. If I could purchase just the one set, that would be wonderful.
Hi Angie,
Yes we do! I am not sure which Greek and Latin Roots Book 1 that you want, as we have a couple of different ones. Here is a link to all of the Greek and Latin resources: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Teacher-Thrive/Category/Greek-and-Latin-Word-Work-102661/Search:Greek+and+Latin+Roots
I'm confused about something - This is included with your digital learning package. How would you implement this in digital learning? Is each page available to assigned to students independently? Can you shed a little light on how this could be used remotely this year?
Hello! The bundle you are referring to was not originally and digital bundle. We just added digital items to it. This resources is not designed to be used digitally.
I have been using this with 4th and 5th graders for a couple of years now, and love this product!!! Would you be willing to add a few? I use these INB pages to correspond to a book I have to make weekly packets, but I am missing the following; curr/curs/cours RUN, prim/prin/pronto FIRST, rect/reg KING, min SMALL, anthro/homo MAN, and sym/syn TOGETHER. I've tried to create my own...but they pale in comparison to yours :)
The book I am using, in case you are interested: Words on the Vine gr.5-8 by Claudia Vurnakes. Many thanks for such an amazing product!!!
Hi Deborah,
I don't have plans to add any new roots in the near future. However, I will definitely consider your suggestions if I ever update the resource.
I love this! Looking through the preview I could not find Sect or Jur/Jus/Jud; are they also included?
Hi Amanda! Sorry, but those stems are not included.
Hello, since I only teach Latin, do you have a file with just Latin? wouldn't want to purchase the whole set if I don't need Greek. This is wonderful!
Hello! I don’t have the Latin activities available separately.
