Description
Greek and Latin Roots! Almost 70% of the English language is derived from Latin and Greek languages. When students learn these “building blocks” it becomes easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words that are related to a known root. It is also increasingly important to explicitly teach students the meanings of Greek and Latin roots as they encounter the very technical vocabulary found in science and other content areas.
This resource combines the instructional value of Greek and Latin roots with the active engagement of Interactive Notebooks. Included are 120 Interactive Notebook activities that will help your students understand the meaning of several words related to over 130 different roots! Each root activity covers 3-8 preselected words. However, blank templates are also included so that you can select your own words. In addition to the Interactive Notebook pages, you will also get word and definition lists for each root.

great resource
This is an activity that is kinesthetic and visual. If you have the students read aloud their work to a partner or their group, then it can include auditory learning as well. I used these when I found them late last school year by including these as an activity filler. Students enjoyed them and made some of my slower working students curious enough to hustle more to complete tasks timely with the thought of cutting, coloring, and gluing. I'm looking forward to supplementing lessons with these resources again this year.
These activities are well thought out. They can be used with other resources also. They activities can also be broken down into which parts to be done over a series of days depending upon available time: day 1 cut and glue/tape, day two color, day three using words in a sentence, day four present to table mates or 1 or 2 students present to class, day five create/play a game such as hangman, charades, alphabetize words, syllabicate words, quiz, etc.
My students are given a separate notebook to keep these in for their vocabulary lessons. They must use a table of contents to support their need to find information later. This activity is very convenient for such. I create a model that students can use as a guide to work independently.
Since reading skills are low and vocabulary is one of the reasons why where I teach, these will help boosting reading scores. Last year, I was able to compare results with my two co-teach classes. 1- taught more consistent morphology. 1- taught some morphology. Both grew at least 40%. The group with morphology grew 70%. Although, I know there were other reasons that contributed to why the second grew more, the morphology work helped those students read better overall.
This is a great resource. I used to have my students make it for their notebooks. However, it consumed too much of the time. I just make a classroom version. I project it on the board and trace it on a butcher paper. Paste construction paper at the back to make it less flimsy, and then I hang it.
This is a fantastic way to teach Greek/Latin roots. It also helps them learn how to cut and glue. Something you would think 5th graders would know by now, but many don't.
Absolutely flat-out brilliant. My students loved this.

Does this resource match your Greek/Latin Prefixes resource for book 1? I have that and am using it currently in my classroom. I'd purchase this resource if it did match that program.
Hi Kimm! Yes, every root (and more) from Books 1 and 2 of the practice printables are included in the Interactive Notebook.
We use the Level VII Prestwick House book for our Latin and Greek Roots class. There are some roots in the book that are not listed in this interactive notebook. Are your pages editable or do you have some blank sheets included in the package that could be modified to fit our curriculum?
Hi Mandy! Yes, we have a blank template available. You can email us at info@teacherthrive.com for it. :-)
Hi! My kids and I have absolutely loved using this interactive notebook resource along with root words book 1 this school year...I am at the point of entering unit 11 (1 is the loneliest number) and am not seeing 'mono' or 'uni' anywhere in the interactive notebook (only 'sol' is in there as far as I can see). Please help it's our next unit to cover.
Edit to Update Question: Thank you for replying so quickly! My confusion in your reply is that it states on the Interactive Notebook page "UPDATE: After many requests, this resource now includes EVERY root (and more) from my Get to the Root of It Books!"...I purchased Book 1 to use with the Interactive Notebook materials based on this, thinking that all the root words are included as stated. It seems this statement should be removed since it does not because it's very misleading esp if purchasing to use together as I did.
Hi Jill. Thanks for reaching out! These two roots are not included in the Interactive Notebook. You can see what's included in the table of contents. These roots are, however, included in our Greek and Latin Sketch Notes Book 1: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Greek-and-Latin-Roots-Sketch-Notes-Book-1-3273969
I downloaded the freebie of this product "mort-" for my 7th graders and they have really enjoyed it. However, there is no time to do more than 5 words with the curriculum that we have to cover, and so I am wondering if there is any possibility of purchasing 5 words of my choice from this product at a lower price? Would you be so kind to consider that option for me?
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, I do not sell any of the components separately. They are only available with the full resource.
Am I missing the root word 'SUB'?
Thanks for reaching out! Sub is not a root included in this resource.
Is this one updated to include all of the Roots for your Book 1 and 2 like the version is on TPT?
Yes, it is.
Hello,
I am wondering if I can use this alongside Get to the Root of It book 1? Can I just pull out the words for each unit or is this meant to be taught in your specific order?
Thanks!
Thanks for reaching out! All of the roots from Get To The Root of It Books 1 & 2 are included in resource, so it will accompany Book 1 perfectly. I recommend that they be taught in the order shown in Book 1.
Hello, are these meant to be used along with your root books 1 and 2? I’m thinking of buying those, and using this for students to take notes.
Yes, every root (and more) from Books 1 and 2 of the practice printables are included in the Interactive Notebook.
How do you suggest organizing this as you use it in the classroom? What supplies do you feel are necessary?
