Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes [Book 2] – A Fun and Effective Way to Build Vocabulary!

Are you looking for an engaging way to teach Greek and Latin roots? This Greek and Latin Roots Sketch Notes [Book 2] resource provides a creative and interactive approach to vocabulary instruction. With 120 pages of unique, hand-drawn doodle-style sketch notes, your students will develop a deeper understanding of word roots while strengthening their comprehension, spelling, and decoding skills.

Why Teach Greek and Latin Roots?

Did you know that nearly 70% of English words come from Greek and Latin? Understanding these roots helps students decode unfamiliar words, improve reading comprehension, and expand their vocabulary. This skill is particularly valuable in content areas like science, math, and social studies, where technical vocabulary often relies on Greek and Latin origins.

By explicitly teaching root words, prefixes, and suffixes, you provide students with the tools they need to break down complex words, making reading and writing easier and more meaningful.

What Are Sketch Notes?

Sketch notes combine words and visuals to increase retention and comprehension. These structured doodle pages allow students to:
✅ Visually represent word meanings
✅ Strengthen memory by activating both verbal and visual learning modalities
✅ Reduce distractions and improve focus
✅ Take ownership of their learning in a fun and creative way

Research shows that doodle-style note-taking improves retention because it engages both sides of the brain. Students will actively process information while enjoying the artistic aspect of the activity.

What’s Included in This Resource?

This 120-page set includes:

Creative Concept, Just Not My Jam

The visual layout and doodle-style sketch notes are undeniably creative and well-executed, but the heavily visual format still didn’t resonate with my preferences. I appreciate the effort behind it and can see how it might engage visual learners, yet, personally, it didn’t click for me.

Courtney G.

Fun worksheet

These are a fun way to do root words each week. We have the students keep them in their binder or folder to look back on throughout the year.

Melissa T.

Love this series!

Each set of these sketch notes are worth getting! Students love them.

Hello, My colleague and I bought your first bundle of roots. We are incorporating the use of the roots (geo, bio, atmo, and hydr) with our NGSS unit on Earth Systems. Would it be possible to make us up a page with geo and atmo? We just need a doodle cover sheet and we LOVE yours! I saw you have one for geo, but we don't need the whole pack, as we don't even get through your entire first pack we bought during the school year.

Teacher Thrive

Hello! I will definitely consider adding atmo if I ever make a third book. While I don’t sell the pages separately, I can email you a blank pdf template and you can make your own for geo. Please email me at info@teacherthrive.com

jennifer elliott

Looking at the table of contents--I see each unit has twice as many pages as words/root. What is on the "other" pages?

Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Jennifer! Each root has a page of student word lists.

liz V.

Are these in black and white like the free ones?

Teacher Thrive

Hello! Yes, they are.

Jennifer W.

Is there a way that you could create a product that was more specific to science. That would be very helpful to me. I need to help the students with reading but it would be better if I could focus a little more on my content area.

Thanks,
Jennifer Walker

Teacher Thrive

Hi Jennifer! Thank you for the request. I will definitely consider such a resource for a future project.

Cindy B.

Do you have one for 1-3 grades? This would be an excellent tool for them!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Cindy! This version could work for third since you can select the words the students they use. However, it might be a little challenging for 1-2.

Cinda L.

Is there anywhere to see the ones in the products before purchasing them? I'm really interested in all of your Greek/Latin roots, but I teach specific stems so I'd like to see how many are in your products before I know what to buy. If that's a big hassle, don't worry. I just wondered if there was a table of contents or anything that would be easy to share? Thanks so much. If email is easier: clowe@ccs.k12.in.us

Teacher Thrive

Hi Cinda! Yes, there is a table of contents in the preview, which you can download for free. It lists all the roots that are included. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Roxana R.

Will both book 1 and 2 be included in you bundle that way I'll just wait to buy the whole bundle.

Teacher Thrive

Hi Roxana! The only bundle I am including them in is my Ultimate Vocabulary Bundle. It gets a little difficult to manage resource updates when I have several different bundles.
