Some TPT novel studies are actually very generic once you start looking through them. This novel study has questions and work that is very specific to each Giver chapter and brings up important aspects of each chapter so we can use them as a springboard for discussion. I think it's also just the right size so kids don't get bogged down with too many tasks after each chapter.

This was excellent. My students were very involved and loved it. I really appreciate the work you put into creating it. Thank you!

This item is as described and easy to use. It worked well in my student group.

This is one of my favorite resources!! I use this resource in class--I review the questions with my students then they can read the book, listen to the audio, or read a digital version of the chapter while filling this out. I had a walk through with persons from my district, region, and even a state representative and they were impressed with the higher level questions while still allowing for differentiation.

I used this as part of a novel study with my advanced 5th grade readers. I loved that this utilized the depth and complexity framework. The discussion questions required deeply critical thinking which is something that many resources lack.

I have bought a few of these resources and love them. Any chance you have or will have one for book Refugee?

Teacher Thrive

Thanks for reaching out, Maria! Unfortunately, we do not have a Critical Thinking Resource for Refugee. However, we will keep this in mind for future projects!

Is there a way to modify, I just purchased this set because the language arts teacher that I co-teach with uses it; however, the language level for my particular students is too high. Thank you in advance for your response.

Teacher Thrive

Hi Kathryn, This is not an editable resource.

Amanda H.

Are there suggested/possible answers for the questions included.

Teacher Thrive

Hi Amanda, These do not include sample answers since the questions are so open-ended. Most of the questions can be answered in multiple, and even conflicting, ways.

Have you read the one and only Ivan? I've heard they are coming out with a movie also. Would you be interested in creating something for fifth grade?

Teacher Thrive

Hello! I haven't read it, but I hear it's amazing. I am not currently creating novel companions. However, if I ever do, I will definitely consider The One and Only Ivan. Thank you for your interest.

Ross Kok

Would you mind sharing with me what your thoughts were as far as the "paradox" questions. I had a hard time coming up with good answers for those. Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Ross! These questions are essentially asking the students to examine contradictory or opposing ideas. These questions are difficult to answer, as they can be answered in multiple and often conflicting ways. Once major paradox that comes to mind for The Giver is the paradox that exists for the Jonah when trying to consolidate the idea of "protecting" The Community from pain, which also insulates them from pleasure.

Would you be willing to create a depth and complexity book unit for "My Brother Sam is Dead"? I have purchased several of your products and appreciate your attention to detail and critical thinking. Let me know as I would like to start a unit in the next week. I would really appreciate your consideration. Thank you so much!

Teacher Thrive

When is the exact date you would need this? It would take me about a week to finish it. So it wouldn't be complete until May 11th. If that's not soon enough then I will definitely put it on my summer to do list.
