Middle Grades Maven

I love how rigorous the questions are. They will really make my kiddos think. I am going to start using this resource tomorrow to provide a challenge for some of my 5th graders. Thank you! :)

Natalie Hegger

Amazing! Using these with my lower kids in book clubs. They are definitely challenging the way they think!

Mary Villaume

These have been an invaluable resource for our novel unit. We've enjoyed it so much and the students have been so engaged; I have purchased another set for our next novel.

Karin Tandy

I simply love your materials...I have to study them to get them in my head too! Awesome work!! Love this book and your materials to go along with it! Thanks!!

Megan McRae

These will be a critical part of our novel unit. I am teaching this book for the first time this spring. It was a big decision for me considering I couldn't stand it when I read it as a 7th grader. I decided to give it another try because I know it will appeal to them, and I could see it with a whole new perspective as a teacher. My current group of 7th graders needs to be pushed beyond surface thinking, and this companion product will do just that. I know your resources will help me develop a new appreciation for this novel. Thanks so much!!

I have bought a few of these resources and love them. Any chance you have or will have one for book Refugee?

Teacher Thrive

Thanks for reaching out, Maria! Unfortunately, we do not have a Critical Thinking Resource for Refugee. However, we will keep this in mind for future projects!

Kathryn N.

Is there a way to modify, I just purchased this set because the language arts teacher that I co-teach with uses it; however, the language level for my particular students is too high. Thank you in advance for your response.

Teacher Thrive

Hi Kathryn, This is not an editable resource.

Amanda H.

Are there suggested/possible answers for the questions included.

Teacher Thrive

Hi Amanda, These do not include sample answers since the questions are so open-ended. Most of the questions can be answered in multiple, and even conflicting, ways.

Keyjahjna H.

Have you read the one and only Ivan? I've heard they are coming out with a movie also. Would you be interested in creating something for fifth grade?

Teacher Thrive

Hello! I haven't read it, but I hear it's amazing. I am not currently creating novel companions. However, if I ever do, I will definitely consider The One and Only Ivan. Thank you for your interest.

Ross Kok

Would you mind sharing with me what your thoughts were as far as the "paradox" questions. I had a hard time coming up with good answers for those. Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Ross! These questions are essentially asking the students to examine contradictory or opposing ideas. These questions are difficult to answer, as they can be answered in multiple and often conflicting ways. Once major paradox that comes to mind for The Giver is the paradox that exists for the Jonah when trying to consolidate the idea of "protecting" The Community from pain, which also insulates them from pleasure.

Would you be willing to create a depth and complexity book unit for "My Brother Sam is Dead"? I have purchased several of your products and appreciate your attention to detail and critical thinking. Let me know as I would like to start a unit in the next week. I would really appreciate your consideration. Thank you so much!

Teacher Thrive

When is the exact date you would need this? It would take me about a week to finish it. So it wouldn't be complete until May 11th. If that's not soon enough then I will definitely put it on my summer to do list.
