Not appropriate for beginning of the year
This is very hard for me to implement until almost the third quarter. Week one has decimals, and my fourth graders don't learn about decimals until the third quarter. It also jumps into division and bigger multiplication early. I wish it had a few weeks of third-grade review.
Affixes Resource Pack
This was not exactly what I was looking for for a supplemental resource for my 5th grade class.
Not a "spiral" review
I wanted to like this so much because it was exactly what I wanted. But, Week 1 already starts talking about coordinate grids and volume, standards that aren't covered until later on in the school year. I wish it was organized by the order the standards are taught throughout the school year instead of introducing end-of-year concepts in the first few weeks.
Great Activities, but Limited Direct Instruction
This resource is advertised as a week-long unit, but in practice it functions more like one day of direct instruction followed by several activity days. There is only one PowerPoint for teaching, with the remaining materials focused on practice.
I expected a more balanced structure with instruction and assessment spread across multiple days. For example, I was able to use the PowerPoint and the second day’s worksheet within a single class period, and the “scoot” activity worked well for a separate day. However, I’m unsure how I’ll incorporate the remaining sketch notes, which might have been more effective if directly integrated into the initial instruction.
One major area for improvement is alignment between instruction and assessment. The assessments and task cards include concepts like “to be” verbs and auxiliary verbs, but these are not introduced or modeled in the PowerPoint. This created confusion for my students and could easily be developed into an additional day of instruction.
Overall, the materials are well-designed and engaging, but the unit would benefit from more comprehensive instruction and clearer alignment between teaching and assessment.
This starts off Running
I thought the assessments would get progressively harder but I do not feel I could start these assessments with my students week 1. I may be able to start them mid year

Are these to be used as students read or after?
They are best completed after reading.
How do you grade this product once completed? Do you have a rubric?
I am using the DC with my higher level students this year. I wanted to know if there were any specific references you used to set this up, and perhaps can help me to use this correctly. I want to make sure I guide students in the right direction.
Hi Chelsea! I use this resource to teach students DC. https://teacherthrive.com/product/teaching-depth-and-complexity-using-fairytales/
I need a little clarification. Is this a Resource Lapbook, that the students refer back to for guidance. Or is this an interactive Lapbook that students write in?
This is an interactive lapbook that students write in.
I am using this with a literature group and the kids love it. Do you have a rubric for grading? If not, a rubric would be a helpful feature for future updates. Thanks!
Hello! I don’t have a rubric, but thank you for the recommendation. I’ll definitely consider making one.
Is it editable? I want to ask specific questions for each icon.
Hello Suzy. No, this is not editable.
The picture on Pinterest showed this product using the actual depth and complexity icons. However, when I downloaded it, that is not the case and the icons don't match up. There was nothing in the description about changed icons and now I can't use this. Is there any way to be refunded?
Hi Erin. I no longer use the old icons. The description does state "IMPORTANT: This bundle has changed. Please read through the product description carefully and check out the links below to see exactly what is included."
I have never taught using depth and complexity. How do I find out more about this topic? I bought this bundle and am fumbling my way through, but I would love to know more. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Melissa
Hi Melissa! The best place to start is with the "Fairytales" resources. This breaks down every element of the framework with concrete examples. You can literally use this with your students while you learn about them as well:-). You should also check out the back sides of the "Thinking Mats." There you will find lots of connections to the framework and other subjects (social studies, science, math and ELA). Please email me if you have ANY questions. I would be happy to help!
Wow, Got to Teach, I saw this on pinterest and thought WOW. You have got to make a modified version for 2nd/3rd grade. They are awesome and would be a HUGE hit!!
Thanks for the very kind words! I am not making any new DC resources at this time, but I will definitely consider this if I start back up again.
