Description
These fifth-grade math sketch notes (AKA doodle pages) are a powerful learning and teaching tool for measurement units for length (linear units), area (square units), and volume (cube units). They cover essential math concepts and procedures for students in a visually appealing way. You can use this resource to supplement any math curriculum, and it is perfect for previewing/pre-teaching or reviewing/reinforcing.
These sketch pages are like mini anchor charts that your students actively create and can be referred to in the future.
While these were specifically created for 5th grade, there are no grade-level indicators on the student materials, so you can use these with older students.
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
- Blank student note page (two sizes: 8.5 × 11 & composition notebook size for INBs)
- Detailed answer key
- Step-by-step PowerPoint
GUIDED NOTE-TAKING
Guiding your students through the note-taking process is so easy and requires almost zero preparation!
- PowerPoint: Each sketch note page comes with a step-by-step PowerPoint that you can use to guide your students as they complete their notes.
- Document Camera: Use a document camera to project a blank copy of the notes. Use the answer key provided to complete the note page in front of your students.
WHY SKETCH?
Sketch notes present your students with a meaningful and engaging activity they will love. Doodle note-taking activates verbal and visual modalities to capture concepts. The whole brain is absorbed in hearing, synthesizing, and retaining ideas. This high level of engagement helps students retain the content and leaves little room for distraction.

This resource was alright, geared toward a much younger age group. However, well layout and organized. save a lot of prep time.
Thanks!
I originally got the 5th grade version of this resource. I LOVED IT. So, I decided to get the 3rd grade version. It has most of them same things as the 5th grade version. For example, we teach compound sentences in both 3rd and 5th grade. I assumed that the 3rd grade version would be tailored down to meet a 3rd grade level or standard....but it was the exact same as the 5th grade version. I am a little disappointed that I spent so much money on something that I already had!
Hi Katy,
The type and format of the resources are the same, but the content is entirely different. The 3rd Grade version is based on 3rd Grade CCSS standards, and the 5th Grade version is based on 5th Grade CCSS standards. There may be a few units on the same topic; however, the upper-level versions either act as a review or go deeper into the particular case. But again, the content is not the same.
The individual MP 1-8 posters are great. But the one listing them all, which I wanted to blow up for a full anchor chart has too much promo information. I'll keep looking.
The formatting is difficult for students to understand. There is a lot of scrolling back and forth for students between the questions and the answer places.
I love the simplicity of the graphics

I just purchased this resource. I can only seem to open one document it has 7 pages. Is that all? Next, where is the PowerPoint found?
Hello, Jolene. The PowerPoint presentations are provided in the zip file/folder that you download. If you're not seeing these files, please contact TpT so they can troubleshoot this with you directly. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Contact
I love this resource! My student was having trouble visualizing volume and this really helped her. I also love how it lays out so clearly why the units change from liner units to square units to cubed units. The one question I have is that in the "Think" portion of the 3D section, did you mean to describe that as area, the same as you did in the 2D section, in the powerpoint? It seems like it should say volume instead...or am I missing something?
Hi Joanna! You're right. This is an error! I apologize for the inconvenience and any confusion this caused. I am correcting it now and will have an updated version posted by the end of the week. Please check back on Friday to download the updated version.
