Mastering Multiplication and Division with Math Fact Sketch Notes: A Proven Path to Fluency, Understanding, and Confidence

A robust foundation in multiplication and division facts is essential for students to excel in mathematics beyond elementary school. Math Fact Sketch Notes offer a structured, research-based approach designed to help students build fluency, flexibility, and a strong number sense.

Why Math Fact Sketch Notes?

Balancing novelty and repetition is key to helping students master multiplication facts. Repetition builds fluency and confidence by strengthening memory through regular, targeted practice. But when combined with novelty—like new strategies, visual models, and engaging activities—it keeps learning fresh and meaningful. This balance helps students move beyond rote memorization into true understanding, making connections, spotting patterns, and applying facts flexibly. This resource emphasizes this by cycling through facts with visual models, strategic reasoning, and varied formats, giving students the repeated exposure they need, without the monotony that leads to disengagement.

MULTIPLICATION FACT SKETCH NOTES EMPHASIS

  • Breaking down facts into smaller, manageable segments.
  • Connecting multiplication and division immediately to reinforce relational understanding.
  • Avoiding timed tests, which can create anxiety and promote rote counting rather than true memorization.
  • An engaging, approachable format that makes learning math facts less intimidating and more enjoyable.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • 73 Blank student note pages (two sizes: 8.5 × 11 & composition notebook size for INBs)
  • Detailed answer keys
  • 73 Step-by-step PowerPoints (one for each note page)

THE MULTIPLICATION FACTS SKETCH NOTES APPROACH

1. Structured Learning Units

Math Fact Sketch Notes organizes multiplication and division facts into eight strategic units, each introducing easily recognizable patterns before addressing more challenging facts:

  • Unit 1: Multiply and divide by 10s
  • Unit 2: Multiply and divide by 5s
  • Unit 3: Multiply and divide by 2s
  • Unit 4: Multiply and divide by 4s
  • Unit 5: Multiply and divide by 8s
  • Unit 6: Multiply and divide by 3s
  • Unit 7: Multiply and divide by 6s
  • Unit 8: Multiply and divide by 9s and 7 × 7 (the only “new” fact left)

2. Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) Model

Math Fact Sketch Notes prioritizes visual representations—such as arrays, number lines, equal groups, repeated addition, and area models—to make abstract concepts more concrete. These visuals help students see patterns, understand relationships between numbers, and connect multiplication and division to real-world contexts. By pairing these tools with hands-on manipulatives and eventually transitioning to abstract reasoning, the program supports a gradual and meaningful development of math fluency.

3. No Timed Tests

Instead of relying on anxiety-inducing timed tests, Math Fact Sketch Notes uses guided note-taking—a stress-free, easy-to-implement approach that requires virtually no teacher prep.

PowerPoint: Each sketch note page comes with a step-by-step PowerPoint that you can use to guide your students as they complete their notes.

Document Camera: Use a document camera to project a blank copy of the notes. Use the answer key provided to complete the note page in front of your students.

With its thoughtful, evidence-based approach, Math Fact Sketch Notes helps students build essential multiplication and division fluency, leading to lasting mathematical confidence and competence. Integrating Math Fact Sketch Notes into classroom routines is a transformative approach to mathematics, significantly impacting student success well into their educational futures.

What's not to love!

Great review of multiplication facts. Students love added them to their resource folder.

Ana C.

I absolutely love this resource!

The Math Fact Sketch Notes are a great way to help students build multiplication and division fact fluency while developing number sense and understanding. I love the visual models, engaging format, and variety of strategies. This is a great resource for reinforcing facts without relying on timed tests. Highly recommend for any 3rd grade math classroom!

Great review resource!

These are a great resource for my students to work on their review of facts. The repetition of the math concepts are great for for lower students and intervention needs.

Thank you for responding to my last question. I couldn’t find the set for 7. Is that one still going to be added? Thank you.

Teacher Thrive

7 isnt inclunded because if you follow the scope and sequence of program, you will have covered all of the 7s (except for 7 x 7).

Unit 1: Multiply and divide by 10s

Unit 2: Multiply and divide by 5s

Unit 3: Multiply and divide by 2s

Unit 4: Multiply and divide by 4s

Unit 5: Multiply and divide by 8s

Unit 6: Multiply and divide by 3s

Unit 7: Multiply and divide by 6s

Unit 8: Multiply and divide by 9s and 7 × 7 (the only “new” fact left)

Jennifer L.

When will the remaining facts be added to the set?

Teacher Thrive

This resource only contains facts up to 10 for the third grade standards. I may add 11 and 12 as a free bonus in the future.

Ontario EdVentures

Hi, do you have any plans to add the multiplication facts for 11 and 12? Thanks!

Teacher Thrive

Hello! I don't have plans currently, but I will definitely add this to a list of future updates.

Dayna B.

Where can I find the blank, colorless student copies for Multiplication Fact Sketch Notes? I see all the PowerPoint files, but I do not see the blank notes. Thank you

Never mind! I just answered my question— you have to scroll further! Great resource!

Teacher Thrive

Hi Dayna! I am so glad you found them. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
