Description
These fifth-grade math sketch notes (AKA doodle pages) are a powerful learning and teaching tool for using the formula (l x w x h) to find the volume of rectangular prisms. They cover essential math concepts and procedures for students in a visually appealing way. You can use this resource to supplement any math curriculum, and it is perfect for previewing/pre-teaching or reviewing/reinforcing.
These sketch pages are like mini anchor charts that your students actively create and can be referred to in the future.
While these were specifically created for 5th grade, the student materials do not have grade-level indicators, so you can use them with older students.
WHAT’S INCLUDED:
- Blank student note page (two sizes: 8.5 × 11 & composition notebook size for INBs)
- Detailed answer key
- Step-by-step PowerPoint
GUIDED NOTE-TAKING
Guiding your students through the note-taking process is so easy and requires almost zero preparation!
- PowerPoint: Each sketch note page comes with a step-by-step PowerPoint that you can use to guide your students as they complete their notes.
- Document Camera: Use a document camera to project a blank copy of the notes. Use the answer key provided to complete the note page in front of your students.
WHY SKETCH?
Sketch notes present your students with a meaningful and engaging activity they will love. Doodle note-taking activates verbal and visual modalities to capture concepts. The whole brain is absorbed in hearing, synthesizing, and retaining ideas. This high level of engagement helps students retain the content and leaves little room for distraction.

I taught 6th grade and used the 6th grade version with great success. So when I had a 5/6 combo I purchased the 5th grade version. However, I found this to be very hard for my 5th graders. I will not use for 5th grade.
This was a very good resource. It was repetitive and didn’t spiral as much as I would have liked, but when used in conjunction with other spiral resources, it was a gem!
The Depth and Complexity Mega Bundle was a bit deceiving. The Author of this project only used a few of Sandra Kaplan's prompts symbols. Some the illustrations used for the prompts do not match Sandra Kaplan's. We are mandated as a Gifted/Talented School, to implement Sandra Kaplan's Curriculum. The Author should have made that clear when the buyer "previews" her project. I would not have purchased it, had I know the illustrations do not match. Hilda Marino
Hi Hilda. All of the preview images and thumbnails clearly show the icons that are used. I am not sure which previews you’re referring to that confused you on what is included.
I wish there was a teacher's copy of this set, but it's a well put together resource for the students!
These daily reviews align beautifully with 6th grade common core curriculum. I used them for about half the year and my students were able to get a relatively firm grasp of all the concepts. We found some of the root word exercises to be a bit random, frustrating, inapplicable to 6th grade. Students also eventually became bored with the repetitive weekly work and were able to identify patterns that led to shortcuts in work completion and therefore less absorption. This is when we switched to other grammar exercises for the rest of the year.
Would I use this again. Definitely. It has its merits. I would probably provide more focused teaching on each concept, skip or replace some root words exercises and spread out the weekly worksheets to every other or every third week throughout the year. I also found the companion weekly assessments program very helpful for summative assessment and will use that again too.
